About NJ Tech Council

A new chapter is beginning at the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) and we are looking for a seasoned, highenergy, entrepreneurial leader to join our team and bring us to ongoing financial sustainability so we can deliver exceptional experiences to our members and support the NJ innovation, entrepreneur, and technology community.   

 

The NJTC is a 24 year young, 1,100+ member organization focused on organizing, fostering and leading development of the innovation economy in region.  Founded in 1996, we are a private, nonprofit membership organization, which supportthe tech, innovation, and entrepreneurial ecosystems across the state and region. It is among the largest and most respected organizations of its kind nationwide.

We boast some of the most dynamic programming in the region, including the Innovation Forecast and Venture Conference which attract hundreds of entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors with great ideas and capital to invest. We also now power Propelify – the community that propels innovation by empowering innovators, entrepreneurs, and technologists with the tools, knowledge, and people to turn ideas into action.  The Propelify Innovation Festival, now powered by the NJTC, unites 8000 attendees at its annual gathering on Pier A in Hoboken.  These programs are fabulous connectors and grow every year with new faces, innovations, and technology.

through the development and execution of a sales strategy that aligns with our new mission and brand. Think of us as a 24-year-old startup that is ready to deliver amazing member value through online and in-person experiences and content.  But we cannot do that without growing our financial foundation.

The Opportunity

The Head of Sales is the front line of the Tech Council. She/he will be the driver and owner of our revenue. She/he will be responsible for defining and managing the execution our sales strategy and will own revenue goals. Performing outreach to a range of stakeholders, including potential vendors, sponsors, exhibitors, the Head of Sales is often a first point of contact for the NJTC and must ensure that we develop a strong, positive brand. The Head of Sales also expands our reach, building a contact list that will include a diverse array of people in a wide range of capacities and levels, and helps to maintain our relationships and image with the community. This position is key to our organization, building revenue streams that allow us to provide an exceptional array of programs for the community. 

 

We are in a stable financial position with significant recurring revenue through membership and sponsorships. However, for us to truly achieve the mission and to deliver exceptional value, we need to develop and execute exceptional 

new programming – much of which falls outside of our baseline budget. We want to exponentially increase the impact and value of the organization and need a strong Head of Sales to help us do that. 

 

Be it identifying and closing sponsors for our Startup Summer House, where we will host and mentor entrepreneurs and produce a show, to our year-end Awards celebration (creative-formal dress only), to intimate networking dinners, to our well-known Propelify Innovation Festivalto our mentorship program, or our other digital programming you will be responsible for garnering the financial and in-kind support to make them happen

The Head of Sales will work as a partner to our Experience and Marketing 

teams to ensure that programs have the financial and in-kind means to be successful and that all revenue products are aligned with our brand and mission. This role will have high level of visibility within the NJTC organization and exposure to the NJTC Board of Directors.  

 

Initially the Head of Sales will manage a team of two (including themselves). As resources and results allow, we expect this team to grow. As such, a strong manager and mentor is key to success. It is expected that the Head of Sales will arrive with a strong network of potential sponsors and partners, however that will be augmented with the networks of others at the NJTC. In addition, the Head of Sales will also be able to rely on others such as the President & CEO to help pitch and close sales.   

 

Beyond the above, it is important to note that we view the NJTC as a startup. We are building a new plan and setting this important organization on a new path to sustainability, independence, and exceptional member value. As such the ideal candidate will thrive in an environment which is fast-paced, flat, and highly entrepreneurial in every sense.

What You'll Do

  • Create plans and strategies for developing business and achieving the NJTCs sales goals.
  • Execute the plans and strategies for developing business and achieving the NJTCs sales goals.
  • Create a culture of success and ongoing business and goal achievement.
  • Manage the sales teams (currently a team of two inclusive of the Head of Sales), operations, and resources to deliver profitable growth.
  • Help identify the team needed and manage them towards delivering a sustainable revenue strategy.
  • Create and/or acquire processes and tools to support the sales cycle.
  • Manage the use of budgets.
  • Help define and oversee sales team member compensation and incentive programs that motivate the sales team to achieve their sales targets.
  • Help define and oversee any partner compensation and incentive programs that motivate partners to drive sales for NJTC.
  • Define and coordinate sales training programs that enable all NJTC team members to achieve their potential and support NJTCs sales objectives. Provide mentoring to all NJTC team members so everyone can help sell the organization.
  • Define sales processes that drive desired sales outcomes and identify improvements where and when required.
  • Put in place infrastructure and systems to support the success of the sales function.
  • Provide detailed and accurate sales forecasting.
  • Compile information and data related to customer and prospect interactions.
  • List ItemMonitor customer, market and competitor activity and provide feedback to company leadership team and other NJTC functions.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Experience, the Head of Marketing, and other executives to develop sponsorship and partner packages that will result in sustainable revenue and/or in-kind contributions.
  • Travel for in-person meetings with sponsors and partners and to develop key relationships.
  • Provide input into the NJ Tech Council (NJTC) strategic planning process and new product development.
  • Support relationships with key sponsors while also zippering the sponsor relationship throughout the NJTC organization.
  • Understand sponsor interests, goals, and needs and developing revenue products to deliver exceptional value while also meeting the interests and needs of the NJTC.
  • Be a main point of contact – but not the only point of contact – for sponsors and partners.
  • Own sales metrics and goals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of sponsorship industry landscape, market trends, and key category activities across the technology landscape.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Experience, Operations, and Executive Team to ensure communication and information flow timely and effectively, and execution of strategy on all projects remains consistent.
  • Maintain CRM entries for respective accounts and other sales reporting tools as needed.

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum 5 years in strategic sales roles with increasing responsibility and results.
  • Proven track record in sponsorship and media sales with strong focus on developing corporate partnerships.
  • Experience with sales and ad campaigns.
  • Ability to communicate at the Board level and at outside speaking events.
  • Solution-oriented, highly motivated, and proactive self-starter who works well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Successful experience building a go-to-market strategy and sales strategy. Proven experience closing deals.
  • Successful experience monitoring and evaluating sales team progress against stated expectations, in addition to aligning and changing behavior with performance expectations
  • Successful experience managing others.
  • Experience managing key customer relationships and closing strategic opportunities.
  • Experience utilizing a CRM tool to manage team sales tasks, pipeline, and closing data.
  • Successful experience hiring and onboarding sales team members.
  • Experience providing status reports with market and customer feedback to the leadership team and Board.
  • Demonstrated ability in all aspects of sales leadership.
  • Persuasive communication skills.

  • Comfort with a flat organization.
  • Willingness to takes ownership of endeavors and see them through to the successful end.
